HUBERT OWENS
Football Official
Owens brings nearly three decades of collegiate football officiating experience across the Southeastern Conference (SEC), Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), and Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC). During his distinguished career, he officiated the inaugural SWAC Football Championship Game in 1999 and worked three SEC Championship Games—including the 2013 SEC Championship—where he made history as the first African American referee to serve in that role.
Experience:
His postseason experience includes assignments in some of college football’s premier bowl games, such as the Rose Bowl, two Fiesta Bowls, the Alamo Bowl, Sun Bowl, Champs Sports Bowl, Belk Bowl, Beef-O-Brady Bowl, Heart of Dallas Bowl, and the Celebration Bowl.

In addition to his on-field accomplishments, Owens has served as an instant replay official and was a member of the officiating crews for the 2022 and 2024 SWAC Championship Games as well as the 2023 Bayou Classic. Since 2008, he has been actively involved in the development of officials as an instructor, clinician, and evaluator at football officiating camps nationwide.

FOR THREE DECADES.
As an instructor and clinician, Owens has provided both classroom and on-field training while collaborating with collegiate officiating coordinators to identify talent and recommend prospective Division I and Division II football officials.

Notable camps where Owens has served as a clinician include the Tom Beard Football Officiating Camp, the SEC and Big Ten–sponsored Diversity Development Officiating Camp, the A-Team Football Officiating Camp hosted by former SWAC Coordinator of Football Officials Eddie Kelley, and the Oxford, Mississippi Football Officiating Camp.
